Rehabilitation and Training for Destitute Children

Destitute children are a term used to refer to children who are deprived of family care and protection live on the street, footpath, rail-station, bus terminals, bazaars, commercial areas, park, stadium, junk boxes or minimum shelter. In Bangladesh, urban working children either live on the street or in overcrowded slum and squatter settlements. There are 700,000 children under the age of 15 working in urban areas, which is 17 per cent of the total urban labor force. The work in industry, transport, commerce, domestic service, metal & leather factories, construction and in garment factories.

Street children have a greater burden than other poor children who are      supervised by adults.  Their problems could be grouped into three classes:

  • Social Problems
  • Physical problems
  • Psychological problems

There are two types of children rehabilitation center.

  1. House type
  2. Hostel type

In house type the children live together like a family. There is no suicidal case found as they having the taste of family. There is also no data of child escaping. But the number of child abuse is huge there. The mixing of girls and boys are also not healthy in our context.

In hostel type there is a little of child abuse as they are segregating the age group. But a huge number of child escaping are followed their and also the case of suicide is in a highRehabilitation and Training for Destitute Children rate because there is lack of belongingness. In hostel there is also a high risk of children addiction as they are not directly connected to the monitoring.

The concept of this project is “belongingness-feel free where you belong”.  A Destitute children grow up without his/her parents, family and own home like other children. In this village, they get a home for their own, a guardian like mother and a family in whole. They get a fixed space to live, eat and a chance to educate themselves and create their own identity.

Rehabilitation and Training for Destitute Children

Destitute children need a space where they feel comfort, they have own earning facilities, a connection with local community which confirm that they are connected with surroundings also, strong connection with ground and also strong connection with themselves.Rehabilitation and Training for Destitute Children

When a normal child gets most of the facilities, destitute children are far from them. So, I try to design a playful environment where they overcome their all problems.

As different age-group has different type of criteria, I separate them by two. One age group is 6-10 who get a house with a mother and some brothers and sisters. Children of this group need a supervision for resolve mental/psychological health. For them, I provide small scale of playground including playing instrument. Another age-group is 11-18, provide a dorm and large playground.

Rehabilitation and Training for Destitute Children

I also try to add color for vibrating their space, more option for hands-on activities. I organized my master plan with maintaining public space in front, which is closer to road, houses are keeping far from road as there are some chance of escaping. Whole programs are connected with pathway.
