Project Description

My client spent a long time after his born in my site of “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari”. It was his father’s own old house and there was a single tin shed building only. Now my client lives in Dhaka. He owned 2 apartment in Dhaka and one in Malaysia. There he may get so many modern facilities but something is missing there, missing for the attachment of root.

So he assigned me to build a new structure at same site removing the old one. Because he wants to give his children a new Dada-Bari(grandfather house) which will be the address to spent their vacation. My client has two children Lamisa(daughter) and Nimo(son). So from there I gave the name of my project-“Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari”. It is a vacation house.

Design Philosophy

From the beginning of conversation with my client we have decided that the house will be facilitate with full of natural elements. So that his children can get the feelings of a grandfather house from which they are apart in Dhaka.
Such a example:

  • Attach with greeneries
  • Feel the rain drop
  • Swimming and playing with water
  • Chattering of birds
  • Fish under water
  • Feel the sun light, and so on
So all these thing are strengthen my design process

Context: “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari” a spectacular Architecture for it’s contextual perspective

Khulna city, the backdrop of ‘Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari’, is renowned for industrial development and is parallel with the river Voirob and Rupsha. The city history elaborate with development of ‘Khalifatabad’ (Khan Jahan Style). There are so many colonial development in this city. Topographically it is flat in nature but full of green and water. Also the city is jammed free and environmentally very comfort zone for living.

Specifically my site is situated at housing state area of Khalishpur, Khulna. Housing state is highlighted after the liberation war 1971. After war the area given by Bangladesh govt. for the Pakistani refuge and there develop a refuge colony which is named ‘Bihari Colony or Khema’. At that time govt. has plotted this area and the size of each plot is determined 2.5 katha to 2.75 katha. Also from then to today all the plots are following zero(0) setback rule for left-right side. Only back and front side of a plot are need to keep free under the setback rule. There is 30′ wide road which connecting this area with the main city area and the river Voirob.

So with respecting this refuge (Old Pakistani muslims) whose are conservative religious followers according privacy, also the small plot size and its set back rules the architecture of this area developed an introvert nature. Where outer space is less important rather inside. So the building turns into a figure with outer barrier wall and less opening in most of the cases. For this reason the climatic consideration like light-ventilation is solved from either courtyard solution for low heighted building and light well for multistoried building. Also for the reason of small plot size and to accommodate many people in a building with minimizing cost they have develop a multi-layer solution within small height condition.

Architecture: “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari” a spectacular Architecture for it’s contextual perspective

The main design of ‘Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari’ is designed from two angles, ensuring both contextual harmony and functional excellence. One is it’s contextual perspective and other is it’s functional demand. Previously I have described about the site location and it’s potentiality and limitations. So I have drawn a sectional similarity from the house pattern of this ‘Khema’ area which derives the project to a introvert nature where outer opening and views are less important rather internal space.

Moreover there is five storied building is under construction at the right of my plot and another two storied is existing in the left and back which are in a very close proximate. But the height of my project is maximum 30′. So it seems to me that the outer fabric is less important rather my internal views. So it gets shape an introvert nature.

Entry and Water Integration

I have allowed to entry of this house over a water body with wooden deck steps where parking for a car beside the deck and I designed this space with the juxtaposition of water and greeneries with a over head open air space. But there is shaded wooden ramp also provided which is very much suitable for children and older person. there is an another channel water body which is terminated from this entry space direct back of the site parallel with a exposed brick wall which is connected with the main building form with wooden louver with glass shade and this natural light, exposed brick wall and water beneath create a dramatic environment.

Atrium and Indoor-Outdoor Connection: “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari” a spectacular Architecture for it’s contextual perspective

During designing ‘Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari’, it was in my mind that when a person opens the main door and puts the first step inside the indoor space, he or she just expresses a fresh breath to see the nature and for this concern I provide a atrium just after the main door. Where the natural sun light comes directly from top to bottom through the glass roof and also for enhancing the dramatic quality of light. Few diagonal wooden frame provide for casting shadow on beside fare face detailed wall. This entry directly terminated a birds garden where trees make a rainforest like environment.

Foyer and Formal Living

After the main door the foyer is surrounded with the atrium at top and two wooden sitting beside the channel water body which is actually the seal level of the window. From this window there is no outside view can find but a exposed brick wall against water at bottom and natural light at top. The formal living is 3 steps down from the foyer level at the left. The living space is designed with another wide water body in two side which act as a natural color fish garden and at the same time the  water is also evaporate and keep the environment cool.

There is wooden deck is provided over this water body where a person can sit over the deck and can touch water with his feet and that came from the concept of pond. Here also I have used long folding window which can open 100%. this view is also blocked with a exposed brick wall where the wall is detailed with pigeon hole and extrude brick stretcher in a scattered way which can casting shadow against the light comes from top of this wall.

Water Features and Vertical Circulation

The water body is at the middle of the formal living and dining where there is punching visual connection is provide with living to dining. The water body is landscaping with few water plant and over this water body the triplex stair is elongate where the stair is end with second atrium.  Here is also the roof is detailed with clear glass for ensuring natural sunlight through diagonal wooden frame. Beside the 3 flight  triplex stair a massive exposed brick wall also gone toward.

The top natural light, diagonal shadow from wooden frame and the brick wall makes a vocabulary which is changing appearance after time to time during whole day long. Here I split the total building in two part where the dining space is 2 feet down from the foyer level. Over this dining child bed-1 is provided. So for stair journey one can find the child bed-1 at 7 feet level.

Rain Court and Family Living: “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari” a spectacular Architecture for it’s contextual perspective

After completing the first round of stair it is terminated the rain court where the floor is landscape with artificial carpet grass which is surrounded with exposed brick well where the head of the well is open such that raindrop can directly fall hare. Beside this rain court family living is provide with clear glass partition. There is also a study space beside the family living and green space is laying with the study. From the family living a verandah with green planter is situated at the front side which is terminated the main gate and this planter is also enhance the space quality of entry side.

Bedrooms and Privacy Considerations

Master bedroom is situated at the road side and a verandah is provide between the bed room and the road where there is detailing with irregular wooden louvered work protecting the bed room from direct sun light from the west corner. From the wooden louver a outer large tree is seen where the louver and the tree also make soothing visual aesthetics.

At the end of the stair there is party space which is linked with the green roof terrace from where the wooden steeped stair is start for going to the mini child swimming pool and the aesthetic beauty of the pool is enhanced with adding a water fall. Overall I have treated this building not as a room concept but it is full of multidimensional natural spaces. Where individual spaces create different type of aesthetic beauty with the help of the natural element.

Material and Construction Approach: “Lamisa-Nimo’r Dada Bari” a spectacular Architecture for it’s contextual perspective

Also here another beauty is it’s material. Here I am using the true expression of the material where the brick is act as a exposed in nature, concrete is standing with it’s rough gray color texture and these two thing is juxtaposed with natural wood. At a glance the building is very simple in respect with the formal expression. But inside this simple structure it is filled up with nature which role a playful dramatic story.
