CENTER FOR THEOLOGY Project Brief:

For thousands of years, humans have developed and built places for the spirit to meet, such as temples, synagogues, cathedrals, chapels, and mosques, to forge a connection with a spiritual realm. From a regional perspective, religion has always been a major component of the identity of the people of the Indian Subcontinent. The region has witnessed numerous conflicts or persecution that are considered to be directly related to religion. A center for theology will be an interfaith and inclusive space that allows people of various religious views to gather for reflection and conversation in a common setting.

At such a center, people from diverse religious backgrounds can come together to engage in dialogue, learn from one another, and deepen their understanding of different theological perspectives. At this very point, this project hypothetically suggests a physical space for all individuals of all faiths and spiritual backgrounds. This place aims to foster compassion, create mutual respect, promote ethical values and understanding among people from various religious backgrounds.

Project Brief:

In Bangladesh, despite its predominantly Muslim population, there exists a rich tapestry of religious traditions encompassing Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and indigenous faiths. However, the peaceful coexistence of these diverse religious communities faces continual challenges due to socio-political tensions and religious divisions. In a global landscape marked by religious conflicts, this initiative in Bangladesh represents a courageous yet essential stride toward fostering inclusivity and harmony.

In the current context, where complex issues require multidisciplinary approaches, a center for theology can provide a unique perspective that integrates insights from various disciplines.

Project Objective

Communal harmony is the hallmark of democracy in a country. Unfortunately, the number of communal incidents is increasing day by day, which is not a good sign for democracy. As Bangladesh is known for communal harmony, this cornerstone of democracy should be maintained. In this context the objectives of this project are;

  • To strengthen Inter Religious Education
  • To create awareness to respect each other’s way of life.
  • To promote Peaceful, Just & Inclusive Societies.
  • To increase cognitive empathy.

CENTER FOR THEOLOGY :Site Rationale

Chittagong is the second largest city in Bangladesh. The city has a population of more than 2.5 million. It’s Metropolitan Area has a population of 4,009,423 (Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, 2022). By religion, the population was 90.11% Muslim, 6.61% Hindu, 2.92% Buddhist, 0.22% Christian, and 0.14% others. (Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, 2022). The site is surrounded by many significant religious places of different religions. Also, the site is enveloped by abundant foliage, offering a serene sanctuary amidst the urban mechanization of the city. This peaceful environment is conducive to contemplation, reflection, and the pursuit of spiritual growth, making it an ideal location for a center dedicated to theology and religious dialogue.
