Publish of “JOURNEY TO THE EAST”:

Arch Bangla News Archive 2001–2006 You Need to know. On August 15, 2001 “Futuristic Novel” JOURNEY TO THE EAST ISBN 1-55212-755-9 was published from Trafford Publishers, Canada. Details may be seen in website http://www.trafford.com/robots/01-0155.html According to Trafford’s Press Release, (the authors) Mary Ann is a pathologist and freelance writer living in Newfoundland. Her brother BiJon Sarma is an author, architect and freelance writer living in Bangladesh. They were able to combine their writing via e-mail over two years to become co-authors of JOURNEY TO THE EAST”.

The story in short is “JOURNEY TO THE EAST” takes place in about the 29th century. The family unit has completely disappeared. Women have been transformed into nothing but a commodity. They are used for child-bearing purposes by some males for exotic hobbies or very unusual old fashioned life styles in this new society. The main characters in JOURNEY TO THE EAST are Gloria and Thomas – young lovers who long to lead an old-fashioned life, long to be joined together in the now-extinct institution of marriage. They want to have a nineteenth-century family unit.

In quest of that they explored all possible venues in the western world. Frustrated by failure, they had no choice except exploring the possibility in the east. To achieve that, they are ready and on the way to leave their homeland and travel to the unknown, uncertain life in the far east. India is the only place with the possibility of some remote pockets left where marriage and family unit might have still survived in the society”.
About their Novel Mary Ann says “Our novel looks at the evolution from our present day state of human rights, women’s liberation and religion and wealth to this futuristic altered human society.

Gloria and Thomas will walk you through history, however this is not a history book.” Some western readers have already questions, how could a book that went completely against the life-style and spirit of the western society be published from a western country. Others, like Brent Maxwell (author of “The Castle” and “A Dangerous Garden”) however opined, “(The) mention of the pursuit of money at all costs being a serious defect of Western society is very true. Sadly, it is also a defect in most of the world’s other societies as well”.

Mary Ann’s recent opinion was, “Immediately after it came out I was having problems, since they thought we were all wrong. After the 11 September incident, however, they realized, there is something very very wrong in this society, and that may even initiate a JOURNEY TO THE EAST” To the best of my knowledge JOURNEY TO THE EAST is the first novel, where two authors from distant land could combine their writing via e-mail to become co-authors.
