Simplicity Of A Simple House : A small house set quietly between hills and water can sometimes speak louder than the most extravagant architecture. This home on the banks of Kaptai Lake, perched between the gentle rise of the Rangamati hills and the shimmering expanse of water, embodies a philosophy of living that many aspire to but few truly achieve: serenity through simplicity.

When the boat pulls up to the small jetty beside the bamboo grove, you are greeted by a little path carpeted with Bermuda grass. A hill rises on one side, and a lake lies on the other. A collection of various native and foreign plants and potted greenery immediately reveals a refined sense of taste. Then you notice a structure where, through the full-height glass, your gaze travels from the dining–living space, across the lawn, all the way to the blue waters of the lake.

The entry is extremely simple. In the middle lie the dining and living areas; on one side there is a bedroom and kitchen, and on the other side, two more beds. The entire home has been furnished in simple, modern, minimal, wooden-toned furniture from their own company, P2P. There is no excess anywhere. Yet every room has a veranda, and full-height sliding glass panels spanning the walls. Outside is a neat grassy lawn, and just beyond it the mesmerizing view of the lake. Open the glass panels, and even lying on the bed you can blend into nature.

The roof of the house has been kept entirely open, with only a light silhouette canopy above. It provides shade without blocking the view anywhere. From the roof, a small wooden bridge leads to the adjacent hill. Though large trees surround it, the center has been leveled into an open field, carpeted entirely with carefully trimmed Bermuda grass. Wherever you look, there is the vast beauty of the lake and nature, accompanied by the chirping of birds.

The hilltops of Rangamati rise from the waters of Kaptai Lake like small floating islands. One of these tiny islands, marked on Google Maps as “Engineer’s Island,” is so small that from outside you would never guess there is a building there. It is on this island that architect Mahadi Iftekhar and Dr. Masuda Nasrin have built their holiday retreat.

From every part of the house, the lake can be enjoyed in such a way that the building does not feel placed in nature; rather, it feels created for nature. The comforts of urban living are there, yet without grandeur or pretentiousness. Amidst breathtaking natural beauty, the house stands in humble presence. It is an ideal place to escape the city’s busyness, to rest a while, and to spend time with trees and nature.

অতি সাধারণ এক অসাধারণ বাড়ি

ছোট্ট ঘাটে বাঁশঝাড়ের পাশে নৌকা ভিড়লে দেখা মেলে বারমুডা ঘাসের একখানা পথ। একপাশে উঠে গেছে পাহাড়, আরেক পাশে হ্রদ। বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির দেশী-বিদেশী গাছ ও টবের কালেকশন প্ৰথমেই জানান দেয় এক রূচিশীল মননের। তারপর চোখে পরবে একটা স্থাপনা, যার ফুলহাইট গ্লাসের ভিতর দিয়ে ডাইনিং-লিভিং হয়ে চোখ চলে যায় অপরপ্রান্তের লন পেরিয়ে হ্রদের নীল জলে।

অতি অনারম্বর এন্ট্রি। মাঝখানে ডাইনিং- লিভিং, একপাশে একটা বেডরূম আর কিচেন, আরেক পাশে দুটো বেড। সম্পূর্ণ বাসা সাজিয়াছেন সিম্পল, মডার্ন, মিনিমাল উডেন কালারের নিজস্ব কোম্পানী P2P এর ফার্নিচারে। কোথাও কোন বাহুল্য নেই। কিন্তু প্রতিটা রূমের সাথে রেখেছেন একখানা চাতাল, আর পূরো দেয়াল জুরে ফুলহাইট স্লাইডিং গ্লাসের পাল্লা। বাইরে একটা পরিপাটি ঘাসের লন, যার পরেই আবার লেকের নয়নাভিরাম দৃশ্য। গ্লাসগুলো খুলে দিলেই বিছানায় শুয়ে থেকেও মিশে যাওয়া যায় প্রকৃতির মাঝে।

বাসার ছাদকে সম্পূর্ণ খোলা রেখে উপরে দেয়া হয়েছে হালকা সিলহোটি ছাদের আচ্ছাদন। তাতে ছায়া হল কিন্তু দৃষ্টি বাধা পেলনা কোথাও। ছাদ থেকে ছোট্ট একটা কাঠের পুল দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া যায় পাশের পাহাড়ে। যার চারপাশে বড় বড় গাছ দিয়ে সাজানো থাকলেও মাঝখানটাকে সমান করে বানানো হয়েছে একটা মাঠ।আর পুরো মাঠ জুড়ে যত্ন করে কাটা বারমুডা ঘাসের গালিচা। যেদিকেই চোখ যায় লেক আর প্রকৃতির অপার সৌন্দর্য্য আর পাখিদের কিচিরমিচির।

কাপ্তাই হ্রদের জলে রাঙ্গামাটির পাহাড় চূড়াগুলো রূপ নিয়েছে জলের উপর ভেসে থাকা ছোট ছোট দ্বীপে। তারই একটা খুব ছোট্ট দ্বীপ, গুগল ম্যাপে দেখা যায় ইঞ্জিনিয়ার’স দ্বীপ নামে। ছোট দ্বীপ, বাইরে থেকে বোঝা যায়না এতে কোন বিল্ডিং আছে। স্থপতি মাহাদি ইফতেখার ও ডাঃ মাসুদা নাসরিন দম্পতি সেখানে তৈরী করেছেন তাদের এই ছুটির নিবাস।

বাড়ির প্রতিটা অংশ থেকে লেকটাকে এমন ভাবে উপভোগ করা যায় যে এটা প্রকৃতির মাঝে স্থাপনা না হয়ে, হয়েছে প্রকৃতির জন্য স্থাপনা। শহুরে আরাম ঠিকই আছে কিন্তু কোন আড়ম্বর নেই, নেই কোন উচ্চকিত অবস্থান। অসাধারণ সুন্দর মনোমুগ্ধকর প্রকৃতির মাঝে কেবল এক বিনম্র উপস্থিতি। শহরের ব্যস্ততা থেকে ছুটি নিয়ে দুদণ্ড জিরিয়ে নেয়ার; গাছের সাথে, প্রকৃতির সাথে কিছুটা সময় কাটানোর এক আদর্শ স্থান।
